How to Get Your Home Guest-Ready Before Thanksgiving

Cleaning house for guests on short notice means working the sightline, not the floor plan: the guest bathroom, the entry, the kitchen surfaces, and the room they will sit in. Skip closets, rooms with closed doors, and anything upstairs unless someone is sleeping there.

Cleaning house for guests on short notice is a sightline problem, not a floor-plan problem. Your visitors will use one bathroom, one entry, one kitchen, and one sitting area. Clean those four to a high standard and the rest of the house can stay exactly as it is.

Most people get this backwards the week before Thanksgiving. They reorganize a hall closet nobody opens, then run out of time before the powder room gets touched. With Canadian Thanksgiving landing on Monday, October 12 this year, you have one long weekend, and this plan spends it where guests are actually looking.

Cleaning house for guests means cleaning what they see

Guests judge a home on cleanliness and smell first, and the bathroom is the room that shifts their opinion the most. Everything behind a closed door is invisible to them, so treat it that way.

A 2026 Today’s Homeowner survey of 1,874 people found that 41 percent notice cleanliness before anything else, and 28 percent notice odour. Asked what would make them think less of a host, 42 percent said a dirty bathroom, compared with 15 percent for dirty floors and 14 percent for a dirty kitchen. The bathroom is a third of the job for a fraction of the time.

That ranking sets the order. Bathroom first, then the entry (the first ten seconds), then the kitchen surfaces everyone leans on, then the main sitting room and its floor. Bedrooms, the basement, and the office get a closed door.

Where do guests actually look?

At eye level and at hand level: the mirror, the toilet, the counter they set a glass on, the light switch, the door handle, and the floor immediately inside the door. Nobody checks the tops of your cabinets.

Zone What guests register Minutes Priority
Guest bathroom Toilet, mirror, sink, hand towel, floor, smell, toilet paper supply 20 Must
Entryway Clear floor, shoe pile, coat hooks, mat, fingerprints on the door glass 10 Must
Kitchen surfaces Counters, sink, stovetop, fridge front, garbage, table 25 Must
Living or family room Coffee table, cushions, remote pile, visible floor, dust on the TV stand 20 Must
Dining area Table, chair seats, light fixture above the table, floor under it 15 Should
Hallway and stairs Fingerprints on the wall, railing, floor 10 Should
Guest bedroom Fresh sheets, clear surfaces, an empty drawer, floor 20 Only if someone sleeps over
Everything else Nothing, if the door is closed 0 Skip

The “Must” rows add up to 75 minutes. That is your short-notice plan when cleaning house for guests, and it holds up even if the call comes Saturday morning.

The 90-minute version

Start with the bathroom, because it is the one room you cannot half-do. Then move outward in the order guests will walk.

  1. Guest bathroom (20 minutes). Scrub the toilet inside and out, including the base and the floor around it. Clean the mirror, wipe the sink and faucet, put out a fresh hand towel and a full roll, and empty the bin.
  2. Entry (10 minutes). Move the shoe pile to a closet, wipe the door glass and handle, shake the mat, and sweep or vacuum the first two metres of floor.
  3. Kitchen surfaces (25 minutes). Clear the counters completely, wipe them, scrub the sink, wipe the stovetop and the fridge front, take out the garbage and recycling, and wipe the table.
  4. Living room (20 minutes). Corral remotes and chargers, wipe the coffee table, straighten cushions, dust the TV stand and any surface at seated eye level, then vacuum the visible floor.
  5. Final pass (15 minutes). Light switches and door handles along the guest path, a quick vacuum of the hallway, and a walk-through from the front door in a guest’s shoes.

Fingerprints on a stainless fridge door are the kitchen detail most hosts forget. Wiping stainless steel with the grain using a damp microfibre cloth and then a dry one takes two minutes and makes the whole kitchen read as clean.

The one-evening version

Give the “Should” rows their time, then add floors throughout the main level and a fridge reset. This is the version to run on Saturday if Sunday is for cooking.

The fridge matters more at Thanksgiving than at any other dinner. A frozen turkey thaws in the refrigerator at roughly 10 hours per kilogram, so a 6 kg bird needs a bottom shelf cleared by Thursday, and Health Canada’s guidance is a fridge set to 4°C or lower. Pull the shelves, wash them in warm soapy water, toss anything expired, and wipe the door seals while they are exposed.

Add the dining light fixture and the chair seats, which collect crumbs at exactly the height a seated guest looks. Then mop the kitchen and entry, vacuum the living and dining floors, and swap the guest bathroom bath mat for a clean one.

What smells like a clean house?

Nothing. A house that smells of nothing has had its garbage taken out, its drains flushed, its damp towels washed, and its fridge cleared. Fragrance layered over an odour reads as covering something up, and 28 percent of guests are sniffing before they have looked at anything.

  • Take out garbage, recycling, and the compost bin the morning of, not the night before
  • Run hot water and a squirt of dish soap down the kitchen sink, and pour a kettle of hot water down the bathroom sink drain
  • Wash every towel in the guest bathroom along with the kitchen dish cloths
  • Run the range hood while cooking and open a kitchen window for ten minutes before guests arrive, even in October
  • Empty the litter box the morning of and vacuum around it

If a room still smells off after that, the source is usually a bin, a drain, or fabric. Deal with the source instead of adding a candle.

What not to clean before Thanksgiving

Anything with a door. Closets, the basement, the garage, the kids’ rooms, and the office can all be closed and forgotten. The inside of cabinets, the tops of the fridge and cabinets, baseboards, and window tracks are invisible to a guest sitting at your table.

The oven interior is the exception people argue about. If it smoked the last time you roasted, deal with it, because a smoke alarm going off with a house full of people is worse than a greasy oven door. If it did not, leave it.

Full room-by-room cleaning, the kind we run through in our house cleaning checklist, is a maintenance routine. Cleaning house for guests is triage. Mixing the two is how people end up with an organized linen closet and a bathroom they apologize for.

A schedule for the long weekend

Spread the work over Friday evening, Saturday, and a 30-minute window before arrival. Sunday and Monday belong to the kitchen.

When Block What gets done
Friday evening 60 minutes Fridge reset, guest bedroom if needed, dining light and chairs, laundry started (towels, bath mat, sheets)
Saturday morning 90 minutes The full 90-minute version above
Saturday afternoon 45 minutes Floors throughout the main level, garbage and recycling out, mats shaken
Day of, 30 minutes before 30 minutes Kitchen counter and sink reset, bathroom wipe and fresh towel, entry sweep, windows open ten minutes

Hosting again in December is a different job, because people stay longer, decorations add surfaces, and the guest room is usually in play. That gets its own two-week countdown. Thanksgiving is the sprint.

Write the guest path on a sticky note tonight (front door, bathroom, kitchen, sofa) and clean only what is on it. If you would rather have that path handled on a set schedule before every dinner you host this fall, a recurring house cleaning plan covers kitchens, bathrooms, living areas, and floors on whatever frequency your calendar needs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to clean a house for guests?

About 90 minutes for a focused sightline clean of a typical three-bedroom home, or a full evening if you add floors throughout, the fridge, and the guest room. A whole-house clean is a different job and takes most of a day.

What do guests notice first in a home?

Cleanliness and smell. In a 2026 Today's Homeowner survey of 1,874 people, 41 percent said cleanliness was the first thing they noticed and 28 percent said odour. A dirty bathroom was the single thing most likely to lower their opinion of the host.

Should I clean before or after cooking on Thanksgiving?

Do the guest bathroom, entry, and living room the day before. Save a 20-minute kitchen reset for right before guests arrive, after the heavy prep is done, so the counters and sink are clear when people walk in.
