House Cleaning Hourly Rates in Ontario vs Flat Pricing

The house cleaning hourly rate in Ontario runs roughly $25 to $55 per cleaner per hour in 2026, with Durham Region companies typically in the $28 to $52 range. Flat pricing usually lands on a similar total for a standard home but removes the uncertainty, which is why we quote flat starting-at ranges instead of a clock.

Calculator, timer, spray bottle and cloths arranged to calculate house cleaning hourly rates

The house cleaning hourly rate in Ontario sits between $25 and $55 per cleaner per hour in 2026, according to a provincial rate guide that breaks the number out by city. Durham Region lands near the middle: $30 to $52 in Pickering, Whitby, and Ajax, and $28 to $50 in Oshawa. Solo cleaners who bill directly tend to sit a little higher, at $35 to $65 per hour nationally, because they carry their own supplies, insurance, and travel.

Those numbers are useful for a sanity check. They are less useful for predicting what you will actually pay, and that gap is the whole argument between hourly and flat pricing.

House cleaning hourly rate by Ontario region

The spread across the province is wider than most people expect. Bigger cities carry higher labour and parking costs, and the rate follows.

Area Hourly rate per cleaner (2026)
Toronto $35 to $60
Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan $32 to $55
Pickering, Whitby, Ajax $30 to $52
Oshawa $28 to $50
Hamilton, Ottawa $30 to $52
Kitchener, Waterloo, Barrie $28 to $50
London, Kingston $28 to $48
Windsor $26 to $45

Other published guides land higher. The Ontario figure we cited in our post on how much house cleaning costs was $45 to $75 per hour, drawn from a different rate survey. The difference is mostly who is being counted: established companies with two-person crews and full insurance bill at the top of the range, while newer solo operators fill the bottom.

What is inside a $45 hour?

The cleaner’s wage is the largest line, but it is well under half of what a company charges. Ontario’s general minimum wage is $17.60 per hour, rising to $17.95 on October 1, 2026, and a job board’s August 2026 average for house cleaners in the province is about $22.42 per hour.

Everything else in the hourly number pays for things you do not see during the visit:

  • Travel time between homes, which is unpaid to the client but paid to the cleaner
  • Liability insurance and workplace coverage
  • Supplies, equipment, and vehicle costs
  • Background checks, training, and scheduling
  • The company’s margin, which is what funds re-cleans when something is missed

A $28 quote and a $52 quote can describe two very different businesses. The low end often means no insurance, no backup if the cleaner is sick, and supplies that come out of your cupboard.

Hourly and flat quotes for the same three-bedroom home

Run the math on a typical Whitby three-bedroom, two-bathroom house and the two models land close together. The difference is who carries the risk of a slow day.

Scenario Hourly model (two cleaners at $40 each) Flat model (Durham Region biweekly range)
Efficient visit, 2 hours $160 $159 to $219
Typical visit, 2.5 hours $200 $159 to $219
Slow visit, 3.5 hours (first clean, pets, buildup) $280 $159 to $219
What you know before the visit The rate only The price

On a good day, hourly wins by a few dollars. On a bad day, hourly costs you the difference, and bad days cluster exactly where you cannot predict them: the first visit, the week after a party, the month the dog started shedding.

This is the limit of any house cleaning hourly rate as a planning tool. It tells you the price of an hour, not the number of hours, and the second half of that equation is the one that moves your bill.

Recurring clients also see their visits get faster as the cleaner learns the home. Under hourly billing, that efficiency shows up as a smaller bill for a while, then usually as a rate increase. Under flat pricing, it shows up as a company that can hold its price.

Why Durham Maid Services quotes flat starting-at ranges

We quote a flat price per visit, shown as a starting-at range on our pricing page, for three reasons.

The price is the price. Recurring house cleaning starts at $129 per visit, deep cleaning starts at $249, and move-out cleaning starts at $299. Your exact number depends on the size and condition of your home, and once we quote it, a slow visit is our problem, not yours.

Nobody benefits from watching the clock. Hourly billing rewards a cleaner for taking longer and punishes them for being good at the job. A flat price lets your cleaner work the full checklist at the pace the home needs, and the recurring house cleaning visit is the same scope every time.

Ranges beat fake precision. A three-bedroom in Courtice with one bathroom and no pets is not the same job as a three-bedroom in Ajax with three bathrooms and two retrievers. A starting-at range tells you where the floor is, and a short quote conversation sets the exact figure before anyone shows up.

When hourly pricing is the honest choice

Hourly billing is not a scam, and there are jobs where it is the fairer model.

  • Organizing and decluttering help. Nobody can scope a closet in advance. Hourly is the only sensible way to bill it.
  • Unknown condition. A home that has not been cleaned in a year, or a rental with no photos, may get an hourly first visit followed by a flat quote for recurring service.
  • Odd one-off tasks. A single room, a post-party kitchen, or a two-hour tidy before guests.

Solo cleaners who bill hourly are also not automatically a worse deal. Many are excellent, and for a small condo in Pickering with one bathroom, a fast independent cleaner at $35 per hour can beat a company’s flat rate. The trade-off is what happens when they are sick, on holiday, or booked, because there is no one to send in their place.

If a company insists on flat pricing for a job with no defined scope, be as cautious as you would be about hourly pricing for a standard recurring clean. The model should match the job. For a larger reset, our breakdown of what deep cleaning costs shows how home size and condition move the flat number.

Six questions that expose a weak hourly quote

Any hourly quote should survive these before you compare it to a flat one.

  1. Is the rate per cleaner or per crew?
  2. Is there a minimum number of hours, and does the first visit have a different minimum?
  3. Does the clock start at your door or at the previous job?
  4. Are supplies included, or billed on top?
  5. What is the estimated time for your home, and what happens if it runs over?
  6. Is the cleaner insured and background-checked, and who sends a replacement if they are sick?

A company that answers all six clearly is probably fine to hire on either model. A company that stumbles on question three or five is telling you where the surprise will come from.

Take your home’s bedroom and bathroom count to our pricing page, find the starting range that matches, then request a quote with any details that might move it: pets, a finished basement, or a home that has gone a while without a clean. You will get a flat number back, not an estimate of hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is hourly or flat-rate house cleaning cheaper?

For a standard recurring clean, the totals are usually close. Hourly can be cheaper for a small, tidy home with a fast cleaner, and more expensive when the home takes longer than the estimate. Flat pricing fixes the number in advance, so the risk of a slow visit sits with the company rather than with you.

Does the hourly rate cover one cleaner or the whole team?

Almost always one cleaner. A quote of $40 per hour with two cleaners on site is $80 per hour of elapsed time. Ask for the rate per cleaner and the expected crew size before comparing quotes.

Why do hourly cleaning quotes have a minimum?

Travel and setup time is the same whether a visit lasts one hour or four. Most companies that bill hourly set a two or three hour minimum so short visits still cover the cost of getting a cleaner to your door.
